The New York City School Construction Authority (SCA) offers exciting internship programs for high school and college students.

SCA High School Summer Internship Program

The SCA Summer Internship Program (“SIP”) recruits talented NYC public high school students for a six-week paid internship with various SCA departments and business partner companies throughout New York City. SIP is designed to expose students to careers in various industries including but not limited to architecture, engineering, construction management, information technology, business, and public administration. The program provides interns with a diverse internship experience along with career mentoring.  Students spend four days a week with their intern host and the remaining day attending educational programming. Assignments will vary depending on company or department and the student’s skill set. The internship is an in person position and the standard hours for the program are 9:00 am-4:00 pm Monday through Friday. A 10-hour OSHA construction safety course will be provided for students based on assignment need prior to the program start date. Students will be required to submit a signed parent consent form prior to participating in construction site visits.   

Program Highlights:

  • Students receive career exposure and guidance. 
  • Students participate in various workshops, a design challenge and panel discussions. Training may include a tour of a SCA construction site.
  • Students are able to network with industry professionals, fellow interns and staff. 
  • Students are paid $16 an hour for 30 hours a week during the six-week internship.
  • Students are assigned a college supervisor who monitors their internship to ensure that it is proceeding properly.

  • The program is open to New York City public high school students.
  • G.P.A. will be considered.
  • Students must be available for the program’s six-week duration and work from 9:00 am-4:00 pm Monday-Friday , and
  • Applicants who are selected for the program must be able to provide original unexpired documentation to show their identity and employment authorization to work in the United States as well as age-appropriate working papers (for those born after July 8, 2006). See the list of acceptable I-9 document below.

Application Process:

  • Click the Applicant Login or copy and paste the link below into a browser address bar and complete the online application. Click the Application Guide link for instructions on how to complete and submit the online application.
    • Upload a current resume to the online application.
    • Upload a complete official high school transcript, as a pdf document, to the online application or either send or ask your school counselor to send the document to SIP by email to SCAINTERNSHIPS. Please add this email to your contact list for your email service provider.
    • Click on the SIP Recommendation Form below. Ask a teacher or guidance/school counselor to complete and submit the recommendation form directly to SIP electronically.

Key Dates

  • Students will be notified by email of the selection decisions for the interview process on a rolling basis by March 15th.  
  • Interviews will be held during the NYC DOE Mid-Winter Break from February 20-23, 2023, and run through March 22nd.  Students selected to interview will receive a Doodle Poll inviting them to indicate their availability to interview for the dates listed in the poll. 
  • Students who complete the interview process will be notified of the selection decisions for the program by April 5th. 
  • Students selected for SIP will receive a fillable PDF version of the SCA employment packet by email. They will need to submit a copy of their completed employment packet, age-appropriate working papers if applicable, and proof of identity and work authorization to SIP by April 12th. 
  • Students will be required to present original documents to the SCA’s Human Resources department on a designated date sometime in early June or earlier.

SCA College Internship Program

The SCA College Internship Program (“CIP”) was established to attract and recruit talented college students interested in architecture, engineering, construction management, information technology, accounting, business management, human resources, public administration, and other careers within the public sector.

Program Highlights:

  • Work on progressively challenging work assignments and utilize current software for the intern host area.
  • Training, mentoring, and networking opportunities with experienced professionals.
  • Internship pays $19-$22 per hour (based on grade level)
  • Interns may work up to 20 hours per week (fall/spring semesters) and a maximum of 37.5 hours per week (June-August)

  • Enrolled full-time in an accredited bachelor’s degree program or in graduate degree program in a major related to the intern host area.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Proficiency in computer programs that are relevant for the intern host area.
  • Good organization skills and multitasking skills are helpful.
  • G.P.A. will be considered.

The SCA has developed and launched the Opportunity Academy (OA) a workforce development and small business initiative. OA was developed to complement the training and experience derived from the SCA’s various business development programs. OA is offered by the SCA in collaboration with LaGuardia Community College’s Adult and Continuing Education Division (ACE). OA’s pilot program began in 2016 with 30 participants. OA is a culturally and ethnically diverse group ranging in age from 19 to 50+. OA continues to train hopefuls of all ages seeking entry into the construction industry as back-office support.

Program Objective

To assist minority, woman owned and locally based business enterprises (MWLBE) enrolled in the SCA’s Mentor programs in their back office operations including the various submissions (i.e. bid documentation, requests for payments, project schedules, change orders, close-out documents, etc.) required by the SCA and New York City agencies.  
The development of a workforce with transferrable job skills that enable them to compete as business development professionals trained in the proper preparation and submission of documentation in various aspects of local government contracting.


Participants are selected to participate in an 18 week paid training program led by public construction and procurement professionals currently working with the SCA and other New York City public agencies
Successful participants are assigned to work as paid interns with SCA Mentor and Mentor Graduate firms and various departments within the SCA for up to 36 weeks. Interns may work for 20 hours per week, with the potential for full-time hours during our peak season.

Training Method

Training modules focus on business development, procurement, construction contracting, and back office support, specifically related to public construction project management.
Participants learn about the requirements for conducting business with the SCA and New York City agencies.  These areas include the procurement process, labor law compliance, and the submissions required during each phase of public construction, from notice to proceed to project close out.

Program Requirements

OA participants must have:  
    • High school diploma or equivalent 
    • Authorization to work in the United States
    • Proficiency in English and strong communication skills 
    • One year minimum of work experience (preferably in an office or customer service setting)
    • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite 
    • Participants must be available to attend training sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:00-5:00p.m. 
    • Participants must be available for internship placement for a minimum of 20 hours per week. Full time hours may be available during the summer.
