Dear Colleagues,

As part of our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) initiative, I am very excited to announce that the SCA will implement mandatory unconscious bias training for all SCA staff.

Unconscious biases are defined as social stereotypes that individuals form about certain groups of people outside of their own conscious awareness. Everyone holds unconscious beliefs about various social and identity groups, and these biases stem from one's tendency to organize social worlds by categorizing.

The initial focus of the training will be tailored to address the critical role of supervisors and executives:

  • Identify behavior that may be considered biased;
  • Thwart biased behavior by staff members;
  • Consider how unconscious bias may manifest in operational and managerial decision-making;
  • Become aware of the possibility of the use of unconscious bias during the recruitment, hiring, leadership, and supervision processes; and
  • Identify the tools necessary to implement structures and mechanisms required to reduce the risk of unconscious bias throughout the agency.

Subsequent trainings will be provided to all staff on the impact of unconscious bias and will provide the skills needed to reduce and manage biases.

Learning objectives include:

  • Understand that even well-intentioned staff have biases;
  • Understand the impact of unconscious bias on what is perceived;
  • Help recognize conscious and unconscious biases; and
  • Devise and implement unbiased behavioral responses.

The training is scheduled to take place in January and February of 2022 and will be in person on SCA premises.  Human Resources will coordinate with all Departments to ensure everyone is scheduled for these very important training sessions. Please be sure to attend your session!

Thank you.
